Over his last few releases, Brisbane producer Vancouver Sleep Clinic (real name Tim Bettinson) has been opening himself up more and more in his atmospheric electronic creations - a vessel through which to let his angels and demons roam free. On new track ‘Mercy’, VSL has teamed up with Toronto-based R&B singer Ebhoni. Although steeped in synthesised instrumentation, Bettinson and Ebhoni have fostered an organic flow together; the steady beats, soothing falsetto, the self-assured energy of Ebhoni and the melancholic outlook of VSL. It’s all about the give and take of any relationship, and if you allow either the angels or demons to take dominance, then you risk it all - as the Canadian vocalist puts it “how long do you think I can do this? / love you while you foolish? / you better fix up before you lose this.” To sum up ‘Mercy’, it’s meaningful songwriting coupled with exquisite production washing these mellow R&B vibes over the listener and encouraging them to reflect on their own actions and relationships with others. - Hannah Thacker
